Not everyone lives near a trustworthy computer repair shop. Rural Pennsylvania, remote communities, or areas underserved by quality tech support — these are real situations where the choice is between mailing your machine to someone competent or settling for subpar service nearby.
Born Again Computer Repair offers mail-in repair service nationwide. This guide explains exactly how the process works, what it's best suited for, and what to expect from start to finish.
What Is Send-In PC Repair?
Send-in repair — sometimes called mail-in repair — is exactly what it sounds like: you ship your computer or component to the repair shop, work is completed, and the machine is shipped back to you. The process sounds simple, but the details matter.
The key difference between a trustworthy send-in repair service and a bad one is communication. With Born Again Computer Repair, the process starts before you ship anything — with a phone or email consultation where Tyler evaluates your described symptoms, confirms your repair is a good candidate for mail-in service, and gives you an honest sense of cost and timeline before you spend anything on shipping.
When Send-In Repair Makes Sense
When local options are poor. If your nearest repair shop has bad reviews, has been unreliable in the past, or doesn't have the technical depth to handle your problem, mailing to a trusted specialist is rational. You know exactly who's working on your machine and what their track record is.
For specific hardware issues. Some repairs are cleanly diagnosable and repairable remotely. These include: OS corruption and software issues, storage drive failure and replacement, RAM testing and replacement, GPU issues (testing, reseating, replacement), power supply testing, and fan replacement. These are the highest-success-rate repairs for send-in service.
For custom PC builds. If you live outside the Pittsburgh area and want a system built by Tyler, the build is assembled, tested, and shipped fully assembled. Local pickup is preferred for high-value builds, but shipping is available with appropriate packaging and insurance.
What's Not Ideal for Send-In
Some situations are better handled locally:
Liquid damage: Liquid damage assessments benefit from in-person inspection, and the outcome varies so dramatically that a phone consultation before shipping is essential.
Unknown or intermittent issues: If your computer "sometimes doesn't boot" or "occasionally freezes," these intermittent issues can be very difficult to reproduce and diagnose without extended time with the machine. They're possible to handle remotely, but expect longer turnaround times.
Very old or unusual hardware: Some older machines require parts that need to be sourced, and shipping a machine multiple times adds cost and risk. For machines over eight years old with unusual issues, a phone consultation first is especially valuable.
The Send-In Process Step by Step
Step 1: Contact us first. Call Tyler at (412) 818-7829 or email bornagaincomputerrepair@gmail.com before shipping anything. Describe your symptoms, your machine's age and specs, and what you've already tried. He'll confirm whether send-in is appropriate and give you an initial cost estimate.
Step 2: Get shipping instructions. Tyler will provide the shipping address and packaging recommendations. Desktop towers should be padded with at least two inches of foam on all sides. Laptops should be bubble-wrapped and boxed separately from accessories. Fragile components deserve a double-box approach.
Step 3: Ship with tracking and insurance. Use a carrier that provides tracking, and insure your shipment for its replacement value. UPS and FedEx are preferred. Keep your tracking number. Born Again Computer Repair is not responsible for damage that occurs during shipping.
Step 4: Diagnosis confirmation. Once Tyler receives your machine, you'll receive a communication confirming receipt and the start of the diagnostic process. Diagnosis typically takes 24–48 business hours.
Step 5: Repair approval. Before any repair work begins, Tyler contacts you with a written quote. You approve the work, or you don't — your choice. If you choose not to proceed, the machine ships back to you with only the diagnostic fee charged.
Step 6: Repair and return. Once approved, the repair is completed and tested. Tyler will contact you when the machine is ready to ship back. Return shipping cost is the customer's responsibility and is communicated upfront.
The Trust Factor
The biggest concern people have about send-in repair is trusting a stranger with a machine that may contain personal data, irreplaceable files, or expensive hardware. Here's how Born Again Computer Repair addresses this:
Tyler is a US Army veteran who built his reputation on personal accountability. Every machine that comes through his door is treated with the same care as if it were his own. He communicates throughout the process, never performs work without approval, and returns machines in better condition than they arrived.
If you have particularly sensitive data on the machine and are concerned about privacy, Tyler can work through a process where the data drive is removed and shipped separately, or the drive is set aside untouched during the repair.
To get started with a send-in repair, call (412) 818-7829 or email bornagaincomputerrepair@gmail.com with a description of your issue. Tyler will respond promptly and walk you through whether send-in repair is the right fit for your situation.
